MCV 222 – April Fools
New Norwegian Naughtiness
By Josh Dare
Swinging into to town like a bat outta hell last weekend was the first of (hopefully many) parties from Norwegian brothers, Haans and Solo Truman. Funky Nation took this reporter places he’d never been before – namely, the back alleys of Laverton, the home of Gliders Bar & Grill and location for the nights festivities.
Walking through the Western style swinging doors, casually past the sneeze guard-protected half price salad bar and into the party, I was taken aback to discover that the very room I was now standing in – the epicentre of funk and fun – was actually a converted shed, ordinarily reserved for Wednesday nights’ barn dancing. The decoré was astounding – clearly no expense had been spared in the ribbons and balloon department. That’s Norwegian design for you.
What also took me aback was the amount of people thrashing it hardcore that night, dancing away like it was their last night of partying on this earth… and that was, just me. I don’t know whether the drive to Laverton kept people away, or the hundred dollars plus booking fee ticket, but the club was as deserted as Anna Nicole Smith’s medicine cabinet. That is, apart from the really nice elderly couple who got lost on their way to the bathroom. Man, they were swinging – but unfortunately had to return to the restaurant as their pork ribs were getting cold.
Nevertheless, had any other party animals attended they would have enjoyed no-waiting bar service and eager cloak room attendant (I still keep my ticket stub for the memories – number 00001). Best of all was the spacious dance floor – finally a chance to bust the moves I’ve been practicising in my bedroom! And what better soundtrack to ‘drop’ them to: Hampton the Hampster, Shaggy, La Macarena, Daphne & Celeste – all the hits were there!
And then, just when the DJ was throbbing, who should take the stage but no other than Flynn, most noted for his performance in the most recent Australian Idol auditions. Performing hits such as ‘Hunka Hunka Burning Love’ and ‘Eye of the Tiger’, Flynn blew those other Idol wannabees like Callea and Casey out of the water and gave this reporter a serious case of Flynndemonium.
But as they say, all good things must come to an end. Usually you hope they come to an end a little later than 10pm when the doors opened at 9pm, but I’m sure we haven’t heard the last from these cheeky Norwegian brothers. An all star night – sure to catch on when word spreads.
