Fab 3
Best out of three JOSH DARE checks out Xchange’s Thursday night line-up.
Good things always come in threes. Like, would Charlies Angels have been the same without Lucy Liu, with my girl Drew, and Cameron D (as per another three, Destiny’s Child)? The Three Stooges is another – Curly, Moe and erm… the other one. And trilogies like Lord of the Rings, or for you geeks out there, Matrix. Oh and let’s not be forgetting those three guys that came over to my house on Sunday.
Guh, my dad, brother and brother-in-law. God, I’m like, totally innocent, but you guys always think I’m like, the biggest slut.
Anyways hopefully I’ll narrowly avoid a rip-off lawsuit by saying that you can now get "free for free" at the Xchange every Thursday night. Dragsters Paris, Rita Lecoqueater and Barbra Quicksand are taking over centre stage and taking you for the ride of your life.
The Fab 3 originally met in their halcyon days in 1991, when their hems were a lot higher, outlooks rosier, and busts less saggy. 14 years down the track, they’ve all embarked on illustrious careers – Paris is a very established performer on the Melbourne circuit, Rita’s fantastic costuming spreads just as far across the town, and Barbara even spearheaded her own political campaign. But like that movie The Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood of The Travelling Pants, or probably more accurately Priscilla: Queen Of The Desert, their successful independent careers always felt as though there was something missing. Or two things missing. Whatever, it’s brought them back together after a 12 years hiatus. A new year made way for a new show, and after a brilliant reception to their initial run in May; the bitches are back at full force on Thursday nights at Xchange.
It’s not your typical drag show with Celine / Mariah / flavour of the month bleating though the speakers. The Fab 3 prefer the term ‘Ogre Drag’, as they’re not female impersonators – to quote Rita herself, "This ain’t no beauty pageant". It’s pantomime, with lots of comedy and classic theatrics like the can-can and Evita. The group wants to bring back old-fashioned big style productions of the 3 Faces era that you just don’t find as much of now-a-days. As Barbra says, it’s a level of production today’s audience isn’t used to, which is also re-introducing campness and an over-the-top flavour to Melbourne’s scene.
The show’s costuming plays up to this principal – everything is big, over the top, large and other words for ‘big’ I could find in a thesaurus. I’m reliably informed that stand out piece from the show is definitely Paris’ dress for the Evita number – a red velvet dress, topped with a rose and an extraordinary head dress, so keep an eye out for that one (like you could miss it).
To cap it off perfectly, Rita sums it up as, "Priscilla-style drag at it’s very finest. If you like a drink, a laugh and a good time, you’re gonna love us."
Shows from 10pm Thursdays at Xchange Hotel, Commercial Road. Free entry.
