Huon Bush Retreats

By Josh Dare

Imagine waking up on a brisk autumn morning to the warmth of the still glowing embers in a self contained fireplace. Lazily stretching and gazing out of the bay windows, you are greeted by luscious tree canopy as far as the eye can see. You step out onto the balcony to enjoy your morning coffee, while inhaling the fresh mountain air and hearing the chorus of bird song around you…

If you want to stop letting your imagination get carried away, then take your carry-on luggage down to Tasmania for this slice of heaven on earth. Huon Bush Retreats, nestled on a private habitat reserve 50kms south of Hobart, is the self-proclaimed perfect place to "relax, explore and experience".

The retreat is located on privately-owned Mount Misery Habitat Reserve (at three times the size of Melbourne’s CBD), which was narrowly saved from wood chipping. The new owners have taken it upon themselves to embrace the natural beauty of the reserve, and hold protection of their natural assets as paramount.

The three cabins have been fitted to the natural surroundings, utilising existing clearings as much as possible, and do not face each other - so are completely private. It’s the kind of seclusion you won’t find on other camping grounds, where some 2000 campers can be cramped into an area roughly the same size.

The cabins are beautiful as well, with contemporary and comfortable décor coupled with a modern, self-contained kitchen including a fridge, oven and kettle - but if you don’t fancy your culinary skills, dinner can be ordered in advance and served direct to your cabin. In addition to adequate bathroom facilities, each cabin boasts a balcony bath tub – ideal for blissing out with a glass of wine and losing yourself in the starry night sky.

While they’ve made it easy for you not to leave your cabin, there’s so much to see in the area you’d be mad to stay inside. There’s three walking paths to chose from – the wheelchair-accessible 2 minute stroll to the lookout, the 40 minute old growth forest track, and the grand daddy of the all: the 5 hour loop ‘pack your lunch’ haul to the summit of Mount Misery. You’re free to explore the tracks unguided, but if you want to get familiar with the lush eco-system, a guide would be more than obliging to share their intimate knowledge.

Swap your legs for a set of wheels, and you’ll find a winery a short drive away, as well as some quaint Tasmanian townships. With all its amendities, the retreat is perfect for two people sharing a relaxing weekend – however those who can’t wait to share their find with friends will be pleased to learn that cabins can sleep up to seven people, when the sofa beds and trundles are setup. Any friends wanting to rough it will find several camping spots (for tents) around the ground also. If you’re thinking of an even bigger scale, the retreat welcomes groups, recently playing host to a walking group of 40, and will actually soon be the location of a wedding. A pure white bride walking down an ‘aisle’ of lush vegetation with a bridal party of kookaburras? Just imagine that…
