Girls Girls Girls

JOSH DARE dives into the plethora of lesbian clubbing options

If you’re a girl with a taste for something a bit different, a taste for something a little mainstream or even in-between, then you’re sure to find something to do on Melbourne’s burgeoning lesbian scene.

Girl Bar returns to the Prince of Wales on Friday July 1st for another night of outrageous antics. As well resident DJs and the lucious ladies the night consistently attracts, there’ll be Girl Bar Go Go Girls galore gyrating, and a new members lounge – don’t forget, you can get your membership medallions from Glasshouse anytime.

Looking for something atmospheric, sexy and a little bit different? Then you’re looking for Blonde On The Rocks, a lush salon for girls who like girls. Running one Friday a month – the next being 24th of June – the night offers dark corners, luscious lounging and bent shows, all in the heady decadence of Dantes Upstairs (Gertrude Street, Fitzroy). Doors open 8pm for happy hour til 9pm, and there’s champagne on arrival.

Abode certainly hasn’t forgotten about the fairer sex, with two speciality nights running in their favour. The first is female-exclusive Femme Fatale on Sunday July 17th, for straight, gay, bi or transgender ladies who have a taste for the alternative. Designed as a sassy, safe place to socialise with girls with similar interests and experience, you can dance, chat, play or just chill out for the night. If you’d like to mingle with the ladies but want to bring a male or female friend, then get to Abode on Friday 1st of July for Tongue’n’Groove. Girls of all persuasions are welcome to exercise their conversation skills and groove to the mix of electro psychedelic funk.

After a roaring performance from Sista She last week, Salon Kitty are back tonight with Feast, featuring Emma Wall with her band, and urban folk music infused with the lot. Doors open 6pm with $2 pots til 9pm – bargain! Following on from that is Saturday’s Open Mike night – who’s Mike, you might ask? And then get slapped upside the head. No, microphone – so now’s your chance to share your ‘talent’ with the world. It’s only til 10pm, and then DJ Sylvana jumps on the decks to spin her ‘big hair’ tunes.

You’ll be totally red faced if you get it confused with completely different Soul Kitty, Melbourne’s self-proclaimed lesbian funk phenomenon - the next of which is on the 25th of June at the Mercat Cross Hotel (Queen St, City). There’s booty shaking tunes, prizes and giveaways, so you’d be funked in the head not to get down there.

"Womyn"-only Shebar will be graced with a performance from Michelle Parsons on Saturday the 9th of July. If you want a feast for the stomach as well as a feast for the ears, dinner will be served from 6pm until 8pm – bookings are advised, so get in quick. It’s all happening at The Sporting Club Hotel (Weston St, Brunswick).

Promising to entice you, beckon you, possess you and leave you wiping the dribble from your chin all at once is new burlesque troupe Voodoo Trash Dolls. They’re taking centre stage when Grotesque Burlesque hits Cherry Bomb Saturday the 25th of June.

We all need to take a break, and King Vic is no exception. Starting this week is Rowdy Crazy Dishlickin Entertainment, which will run for six weeks at the Star Hotel while King Vic takes a much deserved breather. But you’ll be thoroughly entertained in the meantime, as the night is being thrown by acclaimed stars of My Life As A Dyke.

Now get out there, you crazy lesbians!
