MCV 223 – Honey / Madame Gangsta

Phat Phunky Phun

By Josh Dare

News just in: in a stunning revelation this week, KD Lang has announced that she is jumping genres. Say goodbye to the Birkenstock clad pseudo-folk KD you once knew: in a move shadowing her new inspiration Eminem and his movie ‘8 Mile’, KD will be starring in her all-lesbian hip hop tribute to pool tables, ‘8 Ball’ - the semi-autobiographical story of a young Canadian gay girl from the bad side of the tracks, fighting for a spot on the pool table at the same time as fighting oppression through her poetic expression.

Lame stereotypes and bad jokes aside, Ms Lang would be well advised to review the current revolution taking place in Melbourne’s clubs. Momentum is quickly building for alternative nights out, and lesbians are leading the charge.

Enter Honey, the new beat droppin’ hip hop and RnB night at Glasshouse. Kicking off on Friday the 15th of April and back every Friday after, Honey promises a wicked night to all the bling ladies in da (Glass)house. DJs Dextrus and Shannyn will be letting it fly on the decks, and the launch night will offer a performance ‘like you’ve never seen before’ – Yo Baby Pop, a multi-award winning all girl dance troop, will be giving a seven minute performance which takes up the whole dance floor.

After speaking with its punters about what they want in a night out, Glasshouse found overwhelming support for an RnB night. The common complaint was that at other clubs, it was all "dancing like grasshoppers" to house and electronica music. Essentially, hip hop and RnB are all about expression through intelligent lyrics – and Honey’s promoters are proud to give you a chance to connect to the music.

Those who are ‘freakin’ because they don’t want to be seen as ‘haters’, or those that didn’t even know that ‘phat’ is spelt with ‘ph’, don’t despair – anyone who’s keen for a good night out and has an appreciation for awesome beats is sure to have a blast.

Also kickin’ it big style is Madame Gangsta, with the next party at Loop on the Sunday 17th of April. MCV had the chance to attend their last party, and was blown away by the energy at this radical alternative night. Recognising that a night like Madame Gangsta needed to happen and taking charge, the promoters brought together a funky crew and attracted a posse of down-to-earth, pretence free girls. Representing all styles of funk and hip hop, the night is sure to give your weekend the farewell it deserves.

So what’s with the growing appeal with RnB and hip hop? Apart from reflecting its dominance in CD charts, die-hard RnBer Brooke had this to offer: "RnB oozes sexuality; it's funky, fresh and fine. It's everything you'd want your partner to be! The smooth lyrics and sensual beats have every fly girl in da house on the dance floor doin’ her thang, bodies writhing to the rhythm and shakin’ their booties!"
