She Male
Red spot special JOSH DARE jumps on The Market trolley for She Male.
Looking for an excuse to drag your sorry ass out of the house on Thursday nights? (The operative word being drag, of course.) Well, as 9 out of 10 retail therapists agree, Thursday night is the best night of the week to do some window shopping. And where better to do it than at The Market?
Especially now since the joint is getting glamouratzi’d out of its head by the world renowned drag artisté Vivien St James, bringing her She Male show (that’s the name of the show by the way, not a derogatory comment) to the Market for a six week stretch after its fantastic reception at the Greyhound.
Viv had always wanted the chance to shine in a one-person show, so when the G’hound gave her the chance in January she took it with gusto. ‘The Little Variety Show That Could’, as I call it, explodes in a flurry of music, costumes, choreography with four stunning male dancers, all supporting the undisputed star of the show, Ms St James. As the lady herself said, "In devising the show I wanted every number to be different. I had no particular theme in mind, but did have various songs I liked – always keeping at the back of my head that each segment had to be completely different. A variety show that has something that should appeal to everyone."
The result? A furious, fast-paced colourful show. The show is not your usual Les Girls type glamour production, even though that is there in abundance. There are comedy numbers, ballads, rock & roll – and thankfully, they’re mainly modern songs that haven’t been done to death.
Vivien credits her two best assets (apart from her tits) as costume designer slash music cutter Adrian Wise, the man responsible for designing some of Vivien’s most fabulous costumes throughout the years; and Tom Robb, the designer of Viv’s sensational white feather, lace, rhinestone and sequined back pack from last years’ Rainbow Award - which is making a triumphant return in the shows finale. Costuming is a major part of the show with every production number (totalling 7 all up) and Adrian has worked his fingers to the bone to give each that sparkle that won him a Rainbow Award for best costume designer.
On for the ride is the caustic tounge of Tabitha Turlington, compering for the evening and adding another dimension to the nights festivities. Throw in the four red-hot male dancers, and you’ve got yourself one hell of an evening. As Vivien herself said, "it may be winter but those male dancers are enough to warm the coldest heart".
The show started its six week run last night to an overwhelming crowd response, so you have narry five more weeks (that’s til September 1) to catch the show. Showtimes are 12 midnight and 1am, and legendary DJ James Fraser plays vocal house to get you on the dance floor in between shows.
The Market Thursdays, 10pm – 5am. She Male runs from 28th July until 1st September.
