MCV 242 – Scene Lead
Aisle 3: Tina Cousins & Teddy Douglas
Discover a check out of a different kind at The Market this weekend with JOSH DARE
It’s all happening at The Market lately. Fresh from Grind’s 3rd birthday last week, The Market now brings you two international superstars over one weekend. Bargain, shoppers!
First off the rank is my good mate Tina Cousins. Well, I like to say good mate, but really we’ve only shared a fleeting 10-minute interview (MCV 229) – however I’m certain it meant as much to her as it did to me (but why hasn’t she called? Sniff). That was back in May, and hate to sound wanky but ‘you heard it here first’ – Tina hinted to us that she’d be coming to tour, and that she is tonight at Market. Performing songs from her current album Mastermind, you’ll be treated with a stellar performance that will no doubt include hit ‘Wonderful Life’ and me up the front waving a sign that says "What have you done for me lately, Tina? What have you done for me lately?". Best of all, you’re guaranteed a mime-free evening, as Tina blasted pop princesses who mime as a con in our interview. Also on hand to keep you rocking well into the night are DJs Tony Svehla & Henri.
Tomorrow night sees Teddy Douglas taking over the decks for what’s sure to be a memorable performance, as those that caught him playing at his last Australian appearance at Freakazoid in 1999 can attest to. One of the founders of the legendary Basement Boys, he’s not only a DJ but an integral part of a Baltimore multi-major label production and remix company. We spoke to the man himself ahead of his gig, and had to ask – how does being so heavily involved in music production impact on his DJing? "Well, I've been a DJ since 1981. I was a DJ first, so I relate to the dancer first and the music production side of me helps keep in touch with trends, generational changes in culture, etc. It's helpful to have both relationships. They go together like a hand and glove."
Fair enough – so how does his hand go with the DJ turntables, and what can we expect at his gig at Market? "My style is a collage of good music, no matter the genre - rock, funk, house, disco, soul… Expect lots of good music - you may hear something from all those genres." For the record, I asked his guaranteed floor filler – which is anything by James Brown. Sex machine!
With his exciting and eclectic signature tunes, you’re gonna have a hard time controlling yourself on the dance floor. But can we top his best gig? "My best gig would have to be Club Yellow, Japan Tokyo 1997. There were lighters held up at the end of the night (like a rock concert), with the chant of ‘Te-dee Te-dee’!" So flick those Bics and keep an eye out for his releases New Those Guys and Teddy Douglas in record shops. Perhaps they’ll be played later by resident DJs Queen Martine, Tony Svehla and Carmine S Romano? Only one way to find out…
