I wanna take you to a GirlBar
JOSH DARE puts the ‘irlba’ back into GirlBar
Another week, another birthday. What is it with birthdays in September? I’d say it’s because September is nine months after New Years, but it’s clubs I’m talking about (and everyone knows they’re adopted). Nevertheless, lesbionic girl bar GirlBar is celebrating their 12th birthday tonight. And you’re invited.
Twelve years is an awful long time for a party to run for, so I asked head honcho Julie what the first one was like. The reply? "The first GirlBar had 600 girls and 2 boys. Can't remember much else, other than it went off!" Nice one. And it’s still going off today, albeit in a different location.
GirlBar’s venue list reads more like a ‘Who Are You’ than a ‘Who’s Who’ of Melbourne’s venues, but those in the know might recognise its original home of Commerce Club in the city. GirlBar then reached pubescence, slammed the door on Commerce Club saying it "never asked to be born anyway" and chugged on to Melbourne Catch. Like sands through an hour glass, it soon moved on to Milk Bar (South Melbourne), Subway (St Kilda), and Barracuda (Collingwood), before the crazy spin the bottle game came to an end, with the bottle top pointing squarely at Prince of Wales. They locked lips, and the rest, they say, is history.
I also asked about celebrities over the years, coz the first time I went to GirlBar I saw Magda Szubanski. Who totally snobbed me. Anyways, Julie says that Kate Moss, Britney Spears, Cher, and Elvis have all been through their doors, though, "I never actually saw them, but they were the names dropped at the door to get on the guest list." Keen readers will identify how to get in for free, though keen GirlBar owners are probably reading so I just blew that one for you.
So what is GirlBar all about? In text book terms, it’s a mixed diversity where all people of any persuasion can have a rocking time together to an eclectic yet complimentary mix of music styles from break beat to funky house to tribal tunes. GirlBar stands alone in Australia as a lesbian run event in its magnitude and longevity.
Closing the textbook, it’s a wicked night with awesome tunes that you’d be hard pressed to find any where else. Get down there on birthday night and you’ll be treated by a line up of stellar DJ talent. Ambie Dextrus will start the night off with her unique blend of breaks and house, and then Sarah Bromley will be playing a retrospective house set of the music from GirlBar’s 12 years. Special guest DJ Jenderfunk is playing with kdj and the tribal duo are set to take the party on a new adventure, before Guy Uppiah closes the night with a groove that only he can bring.
There’s shows from The Amazing Zyggi, who will perform throughout the night - and at one point rise from a birthday cake to sing her soulful rendition of Happy Birthday. Also along for the ride will be her good mates the Industry Dancers.
Go celebrate this awesome night’s birthday in style, and remember their door policy: be on your best behaviour, and brush your teeth.
GirlBar @ Prince of Wales. Friday 23rd September, 10pm–5am. Entry $15, $12 with flyer, free before 11pm for members.
