The Church of Wonderland

JOSH DARE gets down on his knees for Ron Carroll and Michelle Weeks

Is that a bible in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? Well, who you should really be happy to see is the soulful duo of Michelle Weeks and Ron Carroll – bringing their gospel-flavoured house to Wonderland tonight.

New York-native Michelle (who keen observers will remember from her role as Ronette in cult flick Little Shop of Horrors) has not only seen her records like Glory to God, The Moment of My Life and Don’t Give Up released on labels such as Ministry of Sound and Strictly Rhythm; but also made it her life mission to heal and help people through her music ministry. Healing alongside Ms Weeks will be her close friend Ron Carroll, who took the time to chat with us narry a short while before the show.

Ron started out in the music scene in Chicago with his own club, the Bangin Enterprize – as Ron describes, a place where people came out to get away from the stress of everyday life, where some of the house music pioneers came out to express themselves on the decks. And of course, Chicago is home to the house flavour. As Ron puts it, "Chicago was the first place to do music with drum machines, and the place that started the whole electronic part of it. The tunes from Chicago are tunes that are heart felt, and something not programmed."

He went on to collaborate with some of the biggest names around, like Mousse T and Frankie Knuckles. "It was amazing to me, to get with such talented people, and to learn from them. Just siting there watching what they do was a spiritual moment for me. I stopped doing collaborations for the moment, because I am releasing my own album next year."

Look forward to a memorable experience from his time in Australia. "Every time that I have come there, it has been a great experience for me. The people are so wonderful, and the parties are memorable. What more could a person ask for? I am looking forward to seeing the faces of the people, and sharing a wonderful moment in time, with them. And I want people too expect a great time, of fun laughter and great music."

He’s performing in two capacities at Wonderland – as both a DJ and a singer. He’s old hat at both, so it begs the question: which does he see himself as first and foremost? "I see myself as both. I don’t really look at one from the other, or rate myself on which one I do best. I just do what is needed to lift people’s spirits, and make them happy."

Best of all, he’s pumped to be working alongside Michelle Weeks. "Michelle and I are great friends, and I know that the two of us together should be magic. We both love what we do, and I see a memorable tour."

So remember kiddies: what would Jesus do? He’d go to Wonderland as well.
