Mecca

Mecca: New Zealand slang for McDonald’s, or Melbourne’s rockingest house party? Well, both. Probably, I dunno. I don’t work here.

Mecca was started bang-on two years ago, with a vision of bringing party people together through house music. The promoters felt that electro was killing the true party atmosphere, so decided it was time to bring that feeling back. So, Mecca was born.

The original concept was for a pumping boutique party. Not much has changed over the two years in that regards, but the promoters have achieved the numbers they were hoping for, so it’s not about getting bigger now, it’s about getting better. Quite a feat though really, as Mecca parties are renowned for being some of the best around. We asked organiser-cum-DJ Steve (aka Mr Stoj) to share some stories from past parties.

"All the parties have a thousand great stories. At one of the earlier ones we had a guy and a girl serving champagne from a bathtub. We had to use styrofoam balls because water would be too messy, but didn’t realise what a great insulator the foam was - I think they went through a couple of bottles of champers themselves, just to keep from dying from heat exhaustion. Or so they said. ‘One for you, two for me...’ Damn we went through some champagne! At a more recent one, there was a whole entire mini club happening behind the curtains next to the dance floor. All very above board and legit! They'd just decided to make their own VIP area."

So what can you expect from a party night at Mecca? For starters, the nights are always themed – meaning the vibe is easy to slip into and the craziness is at its peak. This party is ‘In Bed With Mecca’ – so the suggested dress code is ‘what would you would wear in your bedroom’. Rwoar! There’s even a show planned, but they’re remaining tight-lipped – telling me only that it will definitely play up to the theme.

Speaking of playing, kinda just like Field of Dreams, if you build it – they will DJ. Enter mrTimothy, Peter Mac and Sara Tone, among others – a protégé of big name record spinners that definitely know how to rock the house. I’m promised their sets will be energetic, pumping in the mainroom and funky on the rooftop. Don’t miss it.
