MCV 257 – SpinCycle
Spin on it
What makes SpinCycle so god damn cool? For starters, there’s not many other promoters that will let me interview them at 4am on a Monday morning over MSN. And while most pubs settle for ‘no shirt, no shoes, no services’, Spin Cycle has an unofficial rule of ‘no pink salmon shirts with upturned collars and white trainers’.
It all started when Q&A and Witness Protection Program legend DJ Pete Kung and Spin Cycle spin master Jonathan were looking for a place to start a night that was no attitude and straight friendly where they could play alternative music to a queer crowd – as Jonathan says, “Music you can dance to, as opposed to dance music”. So in June this year, they landed upon the Commercial Hotel – and SpinCycle was born.
From the first “monsterous” SpinCycle (as Adam Richard was quoted, “the dancefloor heaves like a bouncy castle full of kids on Ritalin”) the night has evolved to a regular little hoedown in the west; bringing together all types – for example, on one night in particular, there were eight punk trikes parked out the front chained to the light pole with one big chain, and inside a mosh of bears, some clitterati, lots of gay uni students and their friends (plus for good measure a few locals that didn’t know what hit them) all running amok.
They’re kicking it throughout December with a guest DJ alongside Mz Kung each week, leading up to the big one on New Year’s Day – SpinCycle Morning Fresh Edition, from 11am to 11pm on January 1 with 9 DJs over two dance floors, including the beer garden with BBQ. For the bargain cover charge of $10, it’s a hella way to spin out your New Year.
