MCV 268 – Spag N Drag

Spaggin’ and Draggin’

JOSH DARE wears the Dolmio grin for Spag N Drag.

Have you ever been sitting there eating your spaghetti bolognaise and thought to yourself, "Geez I could really use a drag queen right now"? Well, you’re in luck – and you just got luckier. Spag N Drag, which started out on Wednesday nights at Templebar Precinct, has now erupted and spilled over to Monday and Friday nights as well – so that’s three nights a week you can go spaggin’ and draggin’.

Which means you should three times as guilty if you haven’t gone along yet. Spag N Drag is not only the best value dinner deal in town ($10 gets you spaghetti bolognaise and a glass of beer or wine), but the Showgirls have picked up the theatre restaurant gauntlet and truly made it their own.

And that’s largely because it’s not just tailored to appeal to a gay audience. ‘Out of the nightclubs and into the streets’ Amanda Monroe could’ve chanted, but as she says, "A lot of the fun at ‘Spag’ is watching the way that the audience gradually starts to understand what drag is all about. I love when families come in with gay children or gay parents and they’re able to share the experience and explain what’s going on without anyone feeling uncomfortable or out of place. That broad appeal is probably why Spag ‘n’ Drag is going so well. There’s something there for everyone. Now all we have to do is franchise like Maccas and we’ve got it made."

You’ll also have it made if you go along, coz once your dinner is done and you’ve been thoroughly entertained, you’re right in the heart of the north side club precinct – so you’d be hard pressed to find a better start to the evening on that side of town.

Spag ‘n’ Drag, Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights @ Templebar Precinct, 98 Smith Street, Collingwood. Showtime from 8pm. Ph 9417 5811 for bookings.
