MCV270 - Kosheen
Kosheen
JOSH DARE ponders Sian of Kosheen, so – is there a Mr Sheen?
You totally know Kosheen already. Need a hint? Remember their hits Hide U and Catch from their first album Resist? Those who think I’m making a joke about playing hide and seek are mistaken; so maybe youse will remember their next chart-buster All In My Head from hit album Kokopelli? If not, there’s no helping ya - so you’d better get along to the MCV Mobile launch this Thursday at the Market to find out for yourself.
Maybe it’s in the name, you could be thinking? Just what the hell does Kosheen mean anyways? "It is phonetic and warm," lead singer Sian has said. "Actually it is derived from a name for a North American Warrior, Kochese. When we where touring we discovered that the Chinese characters for Ko and She had a meaning of Old and New. Our group name was something that we where throwing around and Kosheen just sounded right, we didn’t realise that it had this meaning."
Maybe this discovery while touring has spurred their love of performing for a crowd. "I cut my teeth on pub gigs in Wales, so I really wanted to get the music of Kosheen represented live. The songs really translated because they're very melodic. A lot of them were written on the guitar and we can actually do most of them unplugged too."
She’s not just handy while unplugged either – she’s also the band’s songwriter. "I used to keep diaries as a kid and turn them into poems and I've always found that writing is better than talking sometimes. It's always been a great way to getting things off my chest."
And soon Sian will have a whole new forum to get things off her chest – their forthcoming third album. So far, only one preview snippet has been released on the web – from a 80s synth inspired number called Overkill – but you can be sure they’re going to use their opportunity at the Market to belt out some new stuff (along with their firm favourites of course). Be the first on your block to hear ‘em by getting down there this Thursday.
