Oxford Pride
Spend a gay May Day in Oxford and help celebrate the contribution that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and transsexual people make to the city. Against the backdrop of Oxford’s dreaming spires, Oxford Pride brings together lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and transsexual communities and commerce to offer a feast of fun on 1 May 2004.
Karl Andrews, chair of Oxford Pride, said: "We’re really excited by the line-up for this year’s event. We want as many people as possible to come along and enjoy the day, so we’ve tried to include something for everyone."
Set on the banks of the River Thames, less than five minutes walk from the city centre, the Oxpens site offers the perfect space to enjoy a picnic with friends and family – while you dance the day away and enjoy the acts and activities.
Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month
One man dies of prostate cancer in the UK every hour. 27,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year, and it has now become the most common cancer in men - overtaking lung cancer. Despite this, research shows that 68% of men know little or nothing about it. This is worrying because, if testicular cancer is caught early enough, it has a 96% cure rate.
The seventh Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month is being held in June and it will be bigger than ever before. With male cancers on the increase, it is essential that you are fully armed with the knowledge of the signs and symptoms of testicular and prostate cancer.
For everything you need to know about testicular and prostate cancer call the Everyman Campaign for a free leaflet on 0800 731 9468
Kent 'Near Agreement' on son of Section 28
Gay Conservatives said that they are 'near agreement' with Kent County Council over its 'replacement' Section 28. Kent introduced a policy following the repeal of Section 28 to restrict the council in 'promoting homosexuality'.
James Davenport, Chairman of Gay Conservatives, said, "I have met with the Council leader, Sir Sandy Bruce-Lockhart today, and I believe we are near agreement. The Council recognises that there is a need for change and that the impression created by the policy's wording is incorrect, open to misinterpretation and offensive."
"The actual intention of the policy was to prevent the provision to children of inappropriately explicit sexual material, which has occurred in neighbouring counties. We are working with Kent to produce a phrasing for this policy that accurately reflects its purpose, and which accurately reflects the Council's position."
Ride and Pride
Fancy a visit to San Francisco Pride in June, followed by a trip down the Pacific Coastal Highway to LA? You could be there if you join a group of cyclists who will be making the journey to raise money for Terrence Higgins Trust. The charity is teaming up with Greenrock to promote a fantastic twelve-day trip which will also raise vital funds for people living with, affected by, and at risk from HIV and AIDS.
Simon Whiteman, Community Fundraising Manager at Terrence Higgins Trust said: "We’re looking for keen cyclists to join us for this fantastic trip, which will help raise much needed funds for THT."
The trip leaves the UK on Friday June 25th, in time for San Francisco Pride on June 26th and 27th. For further information and to book a place, contact Simon Whiteman on 020 7816 4635, or email simon.whiteman@tht.org.uk
Liberals Call for action in Schools against Homophobia
At the National Advisory Group Meeting for LGBT Community groups involved with police and community safety issues, Merseyside LGBT representatives were critical that not enough was being done to tackle homophobia in Merseyside schools.
As a consequence the Liberal Party Group have tabled a request for both research be carried out and that the Education Director for Liverpool to analyse what is currently being delivered in Liverpool Schools, both secular and religious, to tackle homophobia.
Similar research in Birmingham (the Pink Shield Project survey of 750 LBGT) showed alarming responses: 45% of females and 52% of males suffered harassment in last 5 years; 26% of males and 14% of females had suffered violent attacks; and 35% of men had been subject to bullying at school.
"We fear that the extent of this problem as shown by the Birmingham research will be true of other conurbations such as Liverpool. We are determined that people do not suffer such vile oppression because of their lifestyle. Merseyside Police have introduced sound policies for policing the LGBT communities, we now want to see the Education Authorities take stronger and more comprehensive steps to tackle homophobia early on," said Counsellor Steve Radford.
